Pagosa Peak Combo

Hike to the Summit & Scenic 4-wheel drive tour

  • Naturalist Guide: Specializing in wilderness survival, edible, & medicinal plants.
  • 9 hour tour: departs at 7 am and returns around 4 pm Fridays and other days by arrangement.
  • Available: Summer & Fall

Participants must be in good physical condition with no known heart problems and be prepared for rugged cross-country hiking with an elevation gain of approximately 2,000 feet.

This tour is for the Sir Edmond Hillary in you.  Although it’s not Mount Everest, you will still get that incredible feeling of accomplishment from this hike to the top of 12,640’ Pagosa Peak. Pagosa Peak is the most prominent peak in the Pagosa Springs area.

The 4x4 road to the trail head is an adventure in itself.  It’s an old logging road which winds its way up the base of the mountain through beautiful aspen, spruce, and fir forests.

From here we take off on foot, following the elk and game trails as we move up into the forest.  We move at a leisurely pace to allow for the rugged terrain.  Marmots, golden eagles and mule deer are abundant on the mountain. We may even glimpse an elk or two if we’re lucky.

Your guide will point out edible/medicinal plants and assist with wildflower identification along the way for those who are interested.  When you reach the summit, incredible panoramic views of the entire Continental Divide in the pagosa area will unfold before your eyes—craggy, snow covered peaks, peaceful meadows and velvet forests, Chimney Rock – you name it! Visibility is often over 100 miles on a clear day!

We will eat a hearty lunch at the summit – you will have earned every bit of it!  Please join us on this spectacular, exhilarating adventure. You’ll be grandly rewarded for your efforts.
