Our Expert 4x4 driver/guide, specializing in history and old time lore as well as edible and medicinal plants of the region. The Elwood Pass stagecoach trail was once the only road leading east over the Continental Divide from Pagosa Springs. We will travel in comfort in our ¾ ton, 4 wheel drive suburban, crossing the Continental Divide at Wolf Creek Pass with stops at the scenic overlook and Treasure Falls.

Just over the pass, we turn off into the forest and climb the old gravel road into the high country—our goal, The late 1800’s mining town of Summitville at 12,000 ft. elevation We leave the present behind for the rest of the day while we view the old school, hotel, church, and miners’ cabins and imagine what life must have been like from the late 1870s to the turn of the 19th century.

Just past Summitville, We head for the top of 12,602 ft. Mountain for a panoramic, eagle’ eye view of mountain ranges up to 150 miles away. Herds of elk are often sighted in the meadows below. The wildflowers of the alpine tundra blanket the meadows with a rainbow of colors, contrasting sharply with nearby snowfields. Photographers go wild on this mountain top! Next we head out over Summit and Elwood Passes, both over 11,800 feet, to a shimmering alpine pond, where we will stop for a picnic lunch.

On the decent of Elwood Pass you adventurous souls may ride on the scenic roof rack for a fantastic 360 degree view of the Divide. Bring a sweater, jacket, hat, and gloves for the cool mountain air if you wish to choose this option.

Our trip includes stops at miners’ cabins, waterfalls, and rambles through forests and meadows. Interested in wildflowers and edible/medicinal plants? Our guides are well versed and anxious to share their knowledge of these fascinating aspects of nature.
