Upper Animas River and 1880’s Narrow Gauge Train Trip

This trip is the ultimate trip for those seeking whitewater trills, spectacular high mountain wilderness and a “days of yester-year “narrow gauge train ride. You will view the awesome Needle Mountains from the top of 11,000 ft. Molas Pass as well as the bottom of the Upper Animas Gorge 4,000 ft below. This section of river is rated as one of the top ten in the world for its unbeatable combination of rugged whitewater, scenic beauty, and captivating history. On the river we challenge almost continuous Class IV-V rapids with some class IIs and IIIs for a breather. Our shuttle out of the Animas Gorge from Tacoma to Durango will be the famous 1880s Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge train.

This trip is exclusive for adults in good health with some prior river running experience. You must be a swimmer and ready for some vigorous paddling.  Coordination, strength and courage are required for all participants. This trip is not for the timid!

All guests will wear wetsuits, booties, paddling jackets, two life jackets, helmet, wool socks, wool sweater, and polypro long johns. In the high mountains expect cool nights (35-45 degrees) and possible showers. Warm jackets, good sleeping bags, and adequate rain gear are a must.

  • 1 day per person, 2 day with campout and train
  • Included: Guides, boats, paddles, life vests, meals while on river, waterproof gear bags, shuttle to and from river, train trip, and all miscellaneous river gear.
